Project Highlight: the Soyuz Spacecraft move
If you thought we only moved offices, you’d be wrong! There’s no limit to our expertise as can been seen by our latest project.
We recently completed a move for The National Museum Cardiff which is part of Amgueddfa Cymru - National Museum Wales. The move was unusual in that it involved moving and positioning the word famous Soyuz TMA-19M spacecraft that carried astronaut Tim Peake and his two crewmates, Yuri Malenchenko and Tim Kopra, on the Principia mission to the International Space Station in 2015, returning them on 18 June 2016.
The shuttle has been on tour since 2017 and we were honoured to be the chosen relocation experts to move it into the museum as part of a UK tour that’s going to last until May 2019.
Soyuz TMA-19M was launched on a Soyuz-FG rocket on 15 December 2015 from the Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan. Following the launch, it achieved orbital insertion a few minutes later and began its journey to the International Space Station.
Tim Peake and his crew were in space for a total of 186 days. The return journey to Earth was quite arduous and it took the team three hours and 23 minutes to descend from the Space Station to Earth. Re-entry into the Earth’s atmosphere was the toughest part of the journey as the external temperature of the capsule exceeded 1600 °C due to isentropic heating of the air molecules within the compression wave. This rise in temperature led to the capsule acquiring a dark patina after the outer layer was singed in the heat. Thankfully all members of the team landed safely in Kazakhstan once again.
Tim Peake was the first British European Space Agency astronaut to visit the International Space Station. During the first month of his stay he conducted a spacewalk to repair the Station's power supply, drove a rover across a simulated Mars terrain from space and he helped dock two spacecraft among other highlights.
The capsule was acquired by the Science Museum Group in 2016 and has been on display to thousands of museum goers ever since.
