Harrow Green Case Studies - Coleg Morgannwg

The Challenge:

Coleg Morgannwg is a further education college which served the Rhondda Cynon Taff County before its relocation and merger with the College Ystrad Mynach, to form Coleg y Cymoedd. Coleg Morgannwg was a facility for approximately 1000 students and included specialist departments for teaching hospitality and hairdressing. Due to the merger, this is now one of the largest further education providers in Wales.

The Project:

We packed and moved all the college’s assets to their new campus. This included equipment from their commercial kitchen and training kitchens: fridges, freezers, catering equipment, ovens, and stainless steel work tables. It also included all the items from four hairdressing salons, salon chairs, stand-alone vanity units, tanning studios, massage beds and therapy lighting. We dealt with all the packing challenges presented, including the fact that much of the building was without lift access.

Some of the equipment was old and no longer needed, and on completion of the move, the building had to be cleared ready to hand over to developers. Our client was keen to keep this process as cost neutral as possible, and ideally to make it a source of revenue. We were asked to provide options for dealing with the no-longer-needed assets and, as many of the existing assets were too good to be simply recycled or disposed of, we recommended that revenue could be realised by arranging a public auction.

We introduced our auction service partner, Edward Symmons, and we managed the auction process, taking care of issues such as making sure that all items for auction were PAT tested and fit for purpose. Assets auctioned included kitchen training equipment, hairdressing suites and other furniture.

Our Solution:

The relocation of the college went smoothly and was finished on schedule according to our move plan. We then carried out the clearance of the building. Proceeds from the auction went towards off-setting the clearance costs for the whole site. A total of £16,000 was raised from the sale of the surplus items.

We also dealt with a large volume of equipment which was very old and had to be recycled. By breaking it down into its component parts, we were able to release value as the metal was sold and the income was fed back into the project.

With our knowledge and experience, we were able to plan this meticulously and make sure everything was clear and the maximum return gained on the repurposed equipment. The building was then handed over on time to the property developers who took possession of the site within five days of our team finishing work.
