Harrow Green Case Studies - Hull History Centre Relocation

handshake vectorThe Client:

The project required the relocation of thousands of rare and historically important books, as well as maps, newspapers, theatre playbills, records, family papers, illustrations, 100,000 photographs and, among other important local collections, the letters of pioneering aviator Amy Johnson and the papers of the poet Philip Larkin.

target vectorThe Project:

  • The project required specialist handling and relocation of a wide range of priceless documents.
  • Harrow Green’s barcode scanning systems were used to create a digital inventory of the entire archive and ensure each item was relocated to precisely the right location.

building vectorThe Outcome:

  • In total 28,000 boxes were safely moved in sequence into their new climate controlled locations.
  • The consolidation of Hull’s archives has enabled the creation of a single online catalogue, and will in future allow greater online access.

Thanks to a Heritage Lottery Fund grant of £7.7m and another £3m of matched funding, the new building has 13 linear km of atmospherically controlled storage space. It was crucial Hull History Centre chose a relocation provider with the right credentials to plan and execute this specialist move.

The project, which was seven months in the planning and execution, required the specialist handling and relocation of a wide range of historical and unique documents, using proven methodologies for packing, indexing and relocating maps, plans, charts, large books, bound newspapers, many fragile collections as well as the Archive’s own files and card index systems.

“Our experience of previous heritage projects helped us win this important contract.”

Philip Marston, Project Manager, Harrow Green
